Northwest Conference on Childhood Grief 2026

    Doors open at 8:00AM. Please arrive in time to check-in and grab breakfast before the first session begins at 9AM. The day's schedule provides time for 5 CEUs/Clock hours, breakfast & lunch, and networking.

    Safe Crossings Foundation (SCF) presents the 12th Annual Northwest Conference on Childhood Grief in partnership with Journey Grief Support Program at Seattle Children's. This one-day conference advances our vision that all grieving children receive the emotional support they need to heal and thrive after the death of a loved one. We invite you to join us for professional development, community-building, networking and learning with others who provide services to grieving youth and families.

    This conference will offer interactive and informative sessions exploring a wide range of topics and skill development - examples include: using various creative arts with grieving children, facilitating grief support groups with children, and strategies for working with grieving children with specific backgrounds and needs.

    Goals for Conference:
    • Articulate new information on best practices in responding to and caring for grieving children in therapeutic, educational, medical and community settings.
    • Implement new tools and skills to support grieving children.
    • Identify resources and programs available to grieving children to support referrals and networking.
    • Identify strategies to increase access to timely, high-quality and culturally relevant grief support services for grieving children in our region and opportunities to support local advocacy efforts.

    Continuing Education

    This event is designed to support professionals who work with grieving children, such as clinicians, therapists, counselors, educators, social workers, childcare and after-school providers, first responders, and healthcare & hospice providers/workers. Continuing education credits and clock hours are available for professional development needs. Safe Crossings Foundation and CE-Go are co-sponsors of this program which is approved for 5 continuing education credits through APA and NY State Approval Agencies. Physicians can claim Category 2 CME for participating in this activity.

    Participants are urged to review the session descriptions to determine appropriateness for professional and personal interests; this event is designed to support a range of audience professional backgrounds and skill levels. Continuing education credit is not offered for non-educational activities including check-in, meals, social events, and breaks. To receive continuing education credit, applicants must complete all CE materials, sign in/out at designated locations, and submit an evaluation form for the sessions attended. It is the attendees' responsibility to determine if the offered credits will satisfy their needs.

    • Arika Moore Patneaude, MSW, LICSW, APHSW-C
      Arika Patneaude is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Ethnic Minority Mental Health Specialist and Cambia Sojourn Scholar. She has worked extensively in social services since 1992, including adult mental health, homeless housing services, medical social work including solid organ transplant, grief and bereavement, and pediatric palliative care. Ms. Patneaude was born into a family that not only valued but actively engaged in social justice. It was here that her deep foundation for engaging in culturally responsive care and challenging systems of oppression as a clinician was defined and solidified. Ms. Patneaude is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University Of Washington School Of Social Work, a Clinical Ethicist, and the Director of the Bioethics, Palliative Care and Journey Programs at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Additionally, Ms. Patneaude provides consultation and coaching to individuals and programs on engaging in culturally responsive practice across settings. Ms. Patneaude has been a nationally and internationally invited lecturer, keynote speaker and panel member on such topics as supporting patients and families at the end of life, cultural humility, and cultural responsiveness in healthcare, inclusive of ethics, palliative care, mental health and grief and bereavement.

    • Brenda Aguilar, LICSW
      Brenda Aguilar, LICSW Regional Bereavement Specialist of the Journey Program, Seattle Children’s Bereavement Program Brenda Aguilar is a bicultural bilingual Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and an active practitioner of cultural humility. She is a first generation professional, raised by hard working immigrant parents and her extended Latine community. Brenda is the Regional Clinical Bereavement Specialist at Seattle Children’s Journey Program focused on developing grief and bereavement support to families outside of the Seattle city limits, Latina/e/o and Spanish speaking individuals, couples, families, siblings, children who have experienced the loss of a child, sibling, or parent (if child under age 18). Motivated, dedicated, and passionate about developing culturally responsive social and mental health services. Promoting continuity of care and services using culturally and linguistically appropriate methods. Her personal social work practice is strengths-based, values-informed, and trauma informed while using a culturally sensitive approach. Her intention is to live a life with purpose; caring, learning, mentoring, and believing that each of us is filled with unique gifts to share with the world.

    • Ashley Skartvedt, MFA, CTRS/R, RYT-500
      Ashley Skartvedt, MFA, CTRS/R, RYT-500, is the Co-Executive Director of Programs for Pongo Poetry Project in Seattle, WA. She has served the organization since 2013 in a variety of roles, including volunteer, mentor, trainer, and project lead. Ashley has worked as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Yoga Instructor helping people heal from trauma by leading therapeutic groups for youth and adults in psychiatric hospitals and teaching individuals how to increase their awareness of the present moment and connect their mind, body, and spirit. During her tenure, Ashley has led 27 trainings and workshops on the Pongo Method—a trauma-informed approach to facilitating poetry writing for youth.

    • Marquita Straus, MSW, LICSW (she/her)
      Marquita Straus, MSW, LICSW Bereavement Clinician | Journey Program Marquita serves as a Bereavement Clinician, Perinatal Grief & Trauma Therapist, Death Doula, and founder of Imani's Light. She has over 15 years of serving BIPOC families, and aims to inspire and empower people to show up authentically, while fiercely advocating for those navigating spaces that are not traditionally occupied by people of color. Her current roles include serving BIPOC adults & children through Seattle Children’s Journey Program and as a Pediatric Hospice & Palliative Care Social Worker with Providence Hospice of Seattle. In her spare time, Marquita is also a digital storyteller, birth & bereavement photographer, and content creator. She loves to travel, listen to records on vinyl, and spend time with her tiny humans.

    • Chloe Reichert, MS, CCLS
      Chloe is a child life specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital, with over 10 years of experience supporting the psychosocial needs of patients with cancer and blood disorders and their families. Her areas of focus include inpatient and outpatient solid tumor cancers, bone marrow transplant, leukemia and lymphoma, and sickle cell disease, as well as anticipatory grief and post-mortem care. Additionally, Chloe has taught graduate level child life courses, developed grief support programming for next of kin of organ and tissue donors, and is deeply passionate about training and mentoring child life students and new employees. In her spare time, she loves traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time outdoors with her husband and golden retriever, Juno!

    • Colleen Young
      Colleen Young has served as a family advisor at Seattle Children’s Hospital for three years. Her son, Kevon, is eight years old and diagnosed with an SPTAN1 gene mutation, a rare genetic condition. Kevon is nonverbal and uses a communication device. He is wheelchair-dependent, has a GJ tube and a trach, and is also diagnosed with epilepsy and microcephaly. Kevon loves music and spending time with his siblings. Colleen has two other children, ages ten and five, and their family enjoys exploring the outdoors and trying new activities together. Colleen has worked closely with the palliative care team on various projects. As a family advisor, she facilitates parent panels, serves on the Family Advisory Council, and participates in the Families as Teachers program, hosting first-year residents. She values her role as a family advisor because it provides a safe space to share Kevon’s journey and experiences. It also offers opportunities to educate families and medical staff while learning from the stories of others. Being an advisor has allowed Colleen to connect with people from many different backgrounds.

    • Courtney McGrue, LICSW
      Courtney McGrue, LICSW is a Pediatric Grief Counselor with Safe Crossings Program of Providence Hospice of Seattle. Courtney has been supporting grieving children in this capacity for over four years. Due to her own experience in losing a parent in adolescence, she brings a passion and relatability to this work. Previously, Courtney has supported children and families intergenerationally in various arenas, including child welfare, residential care settings, and elderly medical care. Courtney is also a part-time Doula and private practice owner. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, gardening, time with friends and family, and weightlifting

    • Akasha Balkman
      Akasha Balkman, LICSW, is a Pediatric Palliative Care Specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. She is an experienced bereavement clinician who supports children and families through serious illness, end-of-life, and grief. Akasha integrates cultural traditions with clinical frameworks to help Indigenous families navigate loss through healing, connection, and meaning. She holds advanced training in Indigenous End of Life & Grief Care, Conscious Grieving, and Brainspotting for profound grief.

    • Lisa Duke
      Lisa Duke, MSW, Program Coordinator, Bridges Center for Grieving Children. I have been fortunate to work in the role of Family Support Coordinator with the families at Bridges since 2012. Working with grief and loss has challenged and enriched my life. After receiving my Masters in Social Work at New York University, I worked for several years in pediatric community mental health in the South Bronx. After a few years away from my social work career, I was fortunate to find my way to the pediatric bereavement community. I am grateful for our Tacoma community on this journey I share with my husband, Paul and our two adult daughters.

      Luke Mosley, MD MTS is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Bioethics & Palliative Care at University of Washington School of Medicine. He is an attending physician with both the pediatric palliative care team and clinical ethics consultation service at Seattle Children's Hospital. Dr. Mosley completed medical school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he concurrently obtained a Master of Theological Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. He completed a residency in pediatrics and fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His research focuses on the intersections of bioethics and pediatric palliative care.

    • Abby Brockman, MDiv, BCC
      Abby Brockman, MDiv, BCC, is a trauma chaplain with extensive expertise in pediatric grief, sudden and unexpected death, and supporting mental health and suicidality. She is deeply committed to bridging personal grief with collective, social, and political dimensions and advocating for a shift from atomized, compartmentalized care to a more holistic and systemic approach. Raised in Seattle, she earned her undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal and went on to graduate with a Master of Divinity from Boston University. She then completed a clinical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, a clinical residency at the VA Hospital in Seattle, and spent five years as an inpatient chaplain at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She now serves as a Bereavement Clinician with the Journey Program and maintains a private grief counseling practice.

    • Kari Hilwig, LICSW
      Kari Hilwig is a licensed clinical social worker and senior bereavement clinician at the Journey Grief Support program with Seattle Children's Hospital. She also maintains a private therapy practice focusing on adult individuals experiencing serious illness, grief and loss, and caregiver stress and burnout. Kari has extensive experience facilitating support groups, leading grief workshops, and presenting on topics related to illness, palliative care, and grief. As a relational, person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed therapist, she is dedicated to providing compassionate, individualized care to those navigating life’s most challenging transitions.

    • Riley Coyle, MS, CCLS
      I am a Midwesterner to the core, having grown up in Chicago and graduating with my undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Iowa! After completing my Master's Degree in Child Life I was lucky enough to be offered a clinical internship at Seattle Children's Hospital and have been here ever since. I've mainly supported patients and families in the Emergency Department and Hematology / Oncology (Outpatient and Inpatient), giving me the opportunity to gain expertise in both anticipatory grief and grief following sudden loss. I feel so grateful to be here!

    • Jori Bogetz
      Jori F. Bogetz is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, the Associate Director of Research at the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics and Palliative Care, and an attending physician in pediatric palliative care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Bogetz completed her pediatric residency and an Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship at Stanford University and a Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at MGH/Harvard University/Boston Children’s Hospital. Her research focuses on improving care for children with severe neurological impairment and their families through interventions that support high quality communication and family-centered care. Dr. Bogetz has received funding for her research from the National Institutes of Health Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Cambia Health Foundation, the National Palliative Care Research Center, the Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health. Dr. Bogetz has published 50 papers in peer reviewed journals and contributed to 4 foundational textbooks in her field. She serves as a member-at-large on the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Roundtable on Quality Care for Patients with Serious Illness.

    • Nebeu Shimeles
      Nebeu Shimeles is the Co-Executive Director of Development & Finance for Pongo Poetry Project in Seattle, WA. He has spent the majority of his career in nonprofit development, with over a decade of work with a diverse array of community-based organizations and individuals in service of meeting their fundraising needs and realizing their respective missions. He’s been with Pongo since 2019, initially joining as Development Manager prior to assuming his current leadership position. In his current capacity as Co-Executive Director, Nebeu has co-led eight trainings and workshops on the Pongo Method—a trauma-informed approach to facilitating poetry writing for youth.

    • Sierra Nelson, MFA
      Sierra Nelson is a Seattle-based poet and teaching artist. Her books include The Lachrymose Report (PoetryNW Editions), and collaborations with artist Loren Erdrich I Take Back the Sponge Cake (Rose Metal Press) and Isolation (Hudson Print). For over twenty-five years, Sierra has taught creative writing, working with youth and adults in diverse settings including hospitals, public schools, libraries, parks, aquariums, beaches, museums, universities, and detention centers. Since 2009, via the Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools (WITS) Program, Sierra has partnered with Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Palliative Care & Bioethics Program, to mentor creative writing by pediatric patients and their families—and more recently working with the Journey Program as well. In 2010, Sierra helped forge a collaboration between Seattle letterpress artist collective Partners in Print, WITS, and Seattle Children’s: the annual Words of Courage project, which creates artist-designed, hand-printed broadsides featuring poetry by patients at Seattle Children’s. These beautiful poetry prints go to the poets and their families and are also enjoyed by the wider community, including in a touring exhibition to select Seattle Public Library branches.

    • Makenzie Muilenburg, MS, LMHC, NCC
      Makenzie Muilenburg is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor from Seattle, WA. Makenzie is the Program Coordinator for Providence Hospice of Seattle’s Safe Crossings Program, a program that serves grieving children and teens across King and Pierce County at no cost to families. She also runs her own private counseling practice serving adults facing a range of mental health and life challenges. Makenzie has been supporting grieving children in differing capacities for 12 years and also brings her own personal experience of childhood parental loss to her understanding of the work she does. Makenzie received her BS in Psychology from the University of Washington and her MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Washington University. She is also a Clinical Supervisor. In her free time Makenzie loves to read, explore new places, and dance.
